Cold Clear Night

29 12 2008

Christmas passed in a haze of alcohol/food/family/presents and fun and I’ve managed very little photography. However I think I’ve found a new pet project to keep me busy of the next few month.

We’ve been staying with the folk’s right out in the sticks and I noticed on a couple of nights that the really clear evenings combined with the lack of local light pollution produced an amazingly bright night sky, with the milky-way a shimmering ribbon laid across the vivid starfield.

Suitably insulated against the knawing cold (Northface jacket, silly hat and lots of rum) I assembled my tripod and set about trying to get a decent exposure. It was a lot trickier that anticipated. So far i’ve shot 2 nights and i’m still not happy. I’ve included the best pic so far…nightsky_02

There are a number of problems i’ve got to  overcome. Noise levels induced by such long exposures (but I think I’ve sorted that out now), but the most annoying is the sudden cloud cover that instantly extingushes the celestial display. It’s hard to photograph something thats no longer there! Anyway I’ve a few more days here, and several more months of long nights on which to practice and refine the technique. So i’ll keep you posted and expect to see an awesome limited edition print of a galaxy far far away, very soon.

Merry Christmas

23 12 2008

christmas_greetings Well I’m starting to feel festive and wanted to share this happy chappy i snapped at Lynmouth. He will often beg for food from Visitors at this winter surf spot, it’s nice to have his occasional company when i’m stood on the rocks snapping a session.

Welcome

14 12 2008

Hello and welcome to my new online home. I’ve procrastinated for far too long and hope to become a man of action and 2.0 interactivitity.

I spent a couple of months thinking i could get the hang of Dreamweaver and flash in my spare time and was sure i’d knock out a top notch photo site in no time. There is a reason some people get paid good money and have titles like WEBMASTER and WEB DESIGNER, they can do stuff i can’t! As with all things outside my capability, i have to pay some artisan what i consider too much.

However after a quiet afternoon of research/aimless websurfing i discovered WordPress. I’d heard whispers and vague recommendations, but WOW!

With the mighty WordPress as my conduit, i aim to keep you updated with my work & projects as well as offering images/links/articles and hopefully a daily photo journal(maybe weekly but i’ll try and keep it regular)
