Sun, surf, music and mellow vibes where the order of the weekend as the Oceanfest tribe reconvened for the annual mid-summer celebration of beach-life overlooking beautiful Croyde beach. GOLDCOAST SURF CARNIVAL presents the Legacy Elite Ironman / Diamond Lady Knockout The big name invitees take the water for the Elite competition. Consisting of GB's best 24 men and 24 women in a gruelling eliminator, the format will be based on 3 legs of the traditional sprint races of swim, board and ski. The twist in the tail, is that there will be a change in the order and the last 4 are eliminated in each round. So the second round is down to 20 athletes and, for example, the order would be changed to ski, swim and board, with a further 4 eliminated - leaving the grand final with only 16 athletes fighting for the title of GoldCoast Champion of this leg of the Legacy Events Elite summer challenges.

Big Boy PADDLE RACE sponsored by CUSHE The BigBoy is seriously considering evolving its format to include extended classes. This is not an 'Open" invite for all types of flotsam, but rather an attempt to grow the popularity of this challenge amongst serious watermen, and... SUP's!

North Devon Interclub Nipper Challenge The Interclub Nipper event resurrected last year having been previously seen in the GoldCoast production back in 2000 will see Croyde, Bideford Bay, Woolacombe and a host of Cornish and Welsh surf lifesaving clubs boys and girls competing. Events include run-swim-runs, board races, board rescue, ocean person, 1km run, cameron relay and beach relay. The great thing about the format is that it will only count the first 3 finishers from each team for an aggregate score, so team management is going to be critical. The Nippers will then be encouraged to stick around and see the next level of competition in the Aquathon before the big name invitees take the water for the Elite competition.

With so much going on across 3 days the Goldcoast photo team were busy little bees. The team comprising Dan Gaunt (gutted about the Muller rice), Matt “wheres my hat?” Fryer, Ian “pole-cam” Heath, Gordon “the Meerkat” Drybrugh and Andy “need i say more” Skailes and myself spent an industrious, long weekend snapping anything and everything. That did leave me in the unenviable task of sorting, sifting and editing more than 10.000 images…… my delete trigger finger was going like a deranged woodpecker, though it was really hard to make selections in some cases.

OLMPUS-PEN

Had the pleasure of trialing the Olympus “Pen” rangefinder style/interchangeable lensed/compact camera/ style product over the weekend.(check the Kevin Spacey ad) Really great bit of kit that produced some stunning shots and good reactions from crowds it even got a couple of the guys drooling and thinking about raiding the savings. It’s available with a fish-eye and a water-housing as well…mmmm!

In water and out we covered it all and as the sun went down and the lights went up the focus shifted to the stage. Working with such a talented crew was great as we were all able to shoot to our strengths and take time to get involve with events.

The body takes a bit of a pasting on events like this, next year I’m thinking of getting a step counter so we can calculate how far we march.

Warren Latham, GoldCoast Director said, ” We were blessed with fantastic weather, great crowds, very good ambiance and once again we are delighted with the positive fashion in which the weekend was embraced by locals and visitors alike. We are hugely appreciative of all the support we enjoyed from the residents of Croyde, the professional and service agencies, our sponsors, the athletes who participated, the musicians who performed and our brilliant team of staff and volunteers.”
